Once upon a time, in the celestial abode of Mount Kailash, lived Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with their two sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya. One day, a sage gifted them a magical mango, claiming it to be the fruit of knowledge and immortality. Both Ganesha and Kartikeya wanted the mango for themselves.

The Challenge
To settle the dispute, Lord Shiva proposed a challenge. "जो सबसे पहले दुनिया का तीन बार चक्कर लगाएगा और वापस आएगा, वह आम जीतेगा," he declared. ("The first one to circle the world three times and return will win the mango," he declared.) Kartikeya, being swift and agile, immediately mounted his peacock and dashed off to circle the world.
The Wisdom Of Ganesha
Ganesha, on the other hand, pondered for a moment. He then walked around his parents three times and stood before them with folded hands.
"तुम क्या कर रहे हो, गणेश?" asked Parvati, amused. ("What are you doing, Ganesha?" asked Parvati, amused.)
"माँ, पिताजी," Ganesha replied, "आप मेरे लिए पूरी दुनिया हैं। आपके चारों ओर चक्कर लगाना दुनिया के चारों ओर चक्कर लगाने के बराबर है।" ("Mother, Father, you are the entire world to me. Circling you is equivalent to circling the world.")
Shiva and Parvati were deeply moved by Ganesha’s wisdom and devotion. When Kartikeya returned, he found Ganesha already holding the mango.
"तुमने कैसे जीता?" Kartikeya asked, panting from his journey. ("How did you win?" Kartikeya asked, panting from his journey.)
Ganesha smiled and explained his reasoning. Kartikeya, though initially disappointed, realized the depth of Ganesha’s wisdom and accepted the outcome graciously.
Shiva handed the mango to Ganesha, saying, "सच्ची बुद्धि गति में नहीं, बल्कि यह समझने में है कि वास्तव में क्या महत्वपूर्ण है।" ("True wisdom lies not in speed, but in understanding what truly matters.")
Moral Lessons
Wisdom Over Speed: The story teaches us that wisdom and understanding are more valuable than mere physical speed or strength. Ganesha’s thoughtful approach led him to victory.
Respect for Parents: Ganesha’s act of circling his parents symbolizes the immense respect and reverence we should have for our parents, acknowledging them as the center of our world.
Understanding True Priorities: By recognizing his parents as his entire world, Ganesha teaches us to understand and prioritize what truly matters in life over superficial achievements.
Graceful Acceptance: Kartikeya’s acceptance of the outcome shows us the importance of accepting results gracefully, understanding the deeper wisdom behind actions and decisions.
From that day on, Ganesha was revered not just as the remover of obstacles but also as the embodiment of wisdom and understanding. In Hindu mythology, the mouse is often depicted as Ganesha's vehicle (vahana). The mouse symbolizes Ganesha's ability to overcome obstacles and reach the smallest of spaces, reinforcing his role as the remover of obstacles. The story of Ganesha and the mango reminds us that true knowledge and wisdom come from recognizing the true essence of the world around us.
